Delectable Drinkable Gifts for Dad

Father’s Day is just around the corner (June 17th, don’t forget!), so it’s safe to say that June is a month to celebrate dad.  Though you may feel like your dad is the man who has it all, there’s always a special way that you can acknowledge the guy who gave you some of your favorite (or least favorite) characteristics–Thanks, Dad, for my super athletic thighs, I mean, my high intelligence…..

If your dad is your best drinking buddy, you may want to think about giving him a delectable drinkable gift for Father’s Day.

From Whiskey to Wine, here are a few suggestions.

Angel’s Envy Bourbon Whiskey

Based in Louisville, Kentucky, Angel’s Envy Bourbon Whiskey began as a dream of a father and son duo. Today, it is still a hand-crafted, small-batch Kentucky straight bourbon uniquely aged in Port wine casks and produced by Louisville Distilling Company, a subsidiary of our very own Miami-based Bacardi Limited.

Buy Dad Some Bourbon!

The story goes… master distiller, Lincoln Henderson, and his son, Wes, wanted to create a bourbon made in Port barrels. Because it had always been an idea he desired to pursue, Lincoln even came out of retirement to start the project with Wes, and later the duo was joined by Wes’ son, Kyle, continuing a family tradition of working together to create craft spirits. The name of the brand came from a comment that Lincoln made about finally producing a finished whiskey that is better than the “Angel’s Share,” or the 5% of the liquor lost every year during barrel aging. Therefore, he had the “Angel’s Envy” with his prized finished whiskey.

“I’m proud of most of my work, but Angel’s Envy was something really special. Everything came together perfectly and we knew we had an incredible spirit on our hands. The opportunity to work with my family let us try some really exciting things, things I’d always wanted to do. We’re just happy that people seem to like us.”   – Lincoln Henderson

Dad Deserves a Cocktail using Angel’s Envy!

A recipe by Ricardo “Ricky” Rodriguez, Miami Whiskey Guardian:

If Pops is a fan of Bourbon and Coffee, then mix him up a drink that he won’t soon forget. This delicious libation is a twist on an old fashioned. The addition of Coffee Liqueur adds subtle complexity and depth to this take on a classic. Angostura and Chocolate Bitters are added to round out the flavor. Don’t forget an expressed orange peel for aroma. Let’s raise a toast to dads everywhere. Cheers!

Father’s Day Coffee
2oz Angel’s Envy Bourbon
1/2oz Coffee Liqueur
2 dashes Angostura
2 dashes Chocolate Bitters

Combine Ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice and stir for 15-20 seconds. Strain into rocks glass over one large ice cube. Garnish with orange peel.

Dazzle Dad with Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon

Dad + Don Melchor = Win

I must admit, this wine blew me away! And it should have impressed me considering the fact that it has made Wine Spectator‘s Top 100 Wines of the World list SEVEN times, including most recently in 2016. That’s actually seven more times than you made the Dean’s list in college, I’m sure (but don’t remind dad). The label has also produced over 20 vintages that have received 90+ point scores from the world’s top wine critics.

With a debut vintage of 1987, this Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon is quite exquisite for a relative newcomer to the world-class wine scene. From winemaker, Eduardo Guilisasti, and the team that drove the rise to popularity of the iconic Chilean brand Concha y Toro, Don Melchor has become one of Chile’s top wines since its inception in 1986. Now in the hands of winemaker, Enrique Tirado, Don Melchor promises to be a dad-pleaser.

Each vintage’s “recipe” is slightly different. The 2014 had a small percentage of Cabernet Franc blended in to add the perfect amount of subtle pepper spice. A “hearty” Cabernet, Don Melchor offers a perfect accompaniment to a steak and mushroom dinner. For a retail price of around $125, you might have to use some of that hard-earned allowance money, but totally worth an extra few chores if dad lets you enjoy it with him.

Impress Pops with an Umbrian Wine

Show dad how interesting you are by giving him a bottle of wine made from grapes he’s never heard of before, unless he’s super Italian, in which case, he’ll love it anyway. Consider an interesting Italian wine made from 100% Sagrantino grapes. The Montefalco Sagrantino wine from Tenuta Alzatura Winery in the Umbria region of Italy is a red wine that is meant to be served chilled. That’s right! A wine that will go perfectly with your backyard BBQ celebrating dad, but that won’t leave you sweating.

Take Dad Here…in a Bottle

Though red wines should always be stored in a specialized wine fridge or temperature controlled room in the house until you are ready to serve them, this Umbrian red makes for an extra delightful chilled red wine experience. Still a robust, complex, and structured wine with firm tannins, Montefalco Sagrantino can easily be paired with dad’s favorite lamb chops or beef stew.  At a price point below $50, you don’t have to worry about having to borrow money from mom to impress dad this year.

Hope you found some helpful suggestions to one of the great dilemmas of what to get dad on this annual occasion. Enjoy these drinkable options, and have a Happy Father’s Day!
