Oh, Merlot…

How we’ve misunderstood you for 20+ years now. It’s a shame, because there is a lot of really great Merlot out there. If only Sideways had picked another grape to pick on.

But alas, people are coming around to your majesty. Thanks to steady producers who have not given up on you. As well as clever packaging, (wink wink, Paradise Springs Winery), and a new generation of young drinkers who weren’t even born when Sideways hypnotized the older folks into only drinking Pinot Noir. (Or maybe they were just very young…)

For my January Vino column in Biscayne Times, I ask you to reconsider Merlot.

But don’t call it a comeback. Merlot has been around for a long time and is part of some of the most prestigious blends in the world.

If you haven’t made your Wine resolutions yet for 2026, I have a suggestion for you: drink more Merlot! 🍷
